Металлическая банная печь, имея рекордную, по сравнению с кирпичной печью, теплопередающую возможность, тем не менее требует соответствующего устройства, обеспечивающего защиту от жесткого инфракрасного излучения раскаленного металла. Защиту от инфракрасного излучения обеспечивает наружный экран, выполняющий еще и роль конвектора, обеспечивающий нагрев воздуха и создающий в результате этого конвекционную тягу. Горячий воздух устремляется вверх, нижний холодный вовлекается в конвектор. В помещении создаются конвекционные потоки, эффективно перемешивающие слои воздуха и равномерно прогревающие помещение. Конвекционный поток не только способствует эффективному прогреву помещения, но и охлаждает топку, тем самым увеличивается ресурс печи.
Стальная печь с применением жаропрочной стали позволяет уменьшить толщину стенок топки, увеличивая срок службы изделия. Кроме этого вся конструкция легко прогревается, в результате в ней не образовывается сажа, поэтому в печах из тонких материалов в пределах 2 – 2,5 мм установки сажа-чистки не требуется. На печах из толстого металла (особенно импортного производства) сажа-чистки обязательно устанавливаются.
В современных печах применяются более сложные газовые коллекторы с обязательным вторичным дожигом уходящих газов, что еще более увеличивает КПД печи, и позволяет в разы сократить осаждение сажи в дымоходе.

Большинство печей оснащено камерой двойного сгорания. Такие камеры в кирпичных печах назывались "коппаками", а печи копаковыми. На рисунке Стальная колпаковая печь Казачка, в которой дымовые газы дожигаются, а не выбрасываются в атмосферу через дымоход. Дым - это неиспользованная энергия. 5-30% энергии дров при их сгорании в виде дыма выводится через дымоход. Это, с одной стороны, приводит к загрязнению окружающей среды, а с другой - снижает теплоотдачу печи. Возгорание газов начинается при температуре 260С, что составляет половину от необходимой температуры в обычных печах, не оснащенных данной системой. Средняя эффективность повышается до 72%. Автономия значительно выше, чем в печах других марок. Количество несгоревших газов и мелких частиц при этом снижается до 90%. Соответственно изделия, оснащенные системой "чистого горения", позволяют значительно сэкономить топливо, выделяя при одной закладке дров так много тепла, насколько вообще возможно получить от печи.
